Description

In the days of the High Middle Ages, a knight was more than just a warrior; he was a symbol of both martial prowess and the code of chivalry. Alongside strength and skill in battle, a knight was bound by sacred oaths that blended courage with honor, tempered by strict rules of conduct and etiquette. When preparing for combat, a knight would don his armor and arm himself with weapons suited for both mounted and foot combat, the primary among them being the arming sword, also known as the knightly sword.

This particular sword is a faithful representation of the classic single-handed cruciform blade used from around the year 1000 up until the mid-14th century, with some examples lingering in use into the 16th century. Crafted from EN45 high carbon steel, the blade is sturdy and designed to withstand the rigors of battle. Its straight cross-guard and circular pommel reflect the typical design of the era, providing both hand protection and balance.

The grip, encasing the full tang of the blade, is made from wood and carefully wrapped in black leather to offer a secure hold even amid the chaos of combat. Running nearly the entire length of the blade is a shallow fuller,a groove that lightens the blade without sacrificing strength, a feature well-understood by smiths of the time. The pommel is peened, a traditional method where the tang is hammered over the pommel’s base to secure it permanently, ensuring the sword’s integrity during the heat of battle.

This full tang construction means the blade and handle are forged from a single piece of steel, providing superior strength and balance, qualities essential for a weapon expected to perform reliably in combat or re-enactment. Accompanying the sword is a wooden scabbard wrapped in rexin, a durable leather substitute, finished with steel fittings called the locket and chape that protect the blade and the scabbard’s tip.

Whether worn by a knight on the battlefield, displayed as a symbol of status, or used in staged combat, the knightly sword embodies the martial spirit and craftsmanship of the medieval period.
