Description

Circa 700

In the early Dark Ages, the art of swordmaking was steadily advancing as smiths learned to better control the forging and tempering of steel. This slashing sword bears a broad, sturdy blade forged from 1095 high carbon steel, a choice steel that offers a firm balance between hardness and flexibility, crucial for keeping a keen edge without becoming brittle on the battlefield. The blade measures 3⁄16″ thick and 2″ wide, dimensions that grant it both the heft to cut through armor and the resilience to withstand heavy blows. The fittings are cast from antiqued bronze, a material favored in this period for its strength and natural resistance to rust. The grip is crafted from wood and tightly wrapped in brown leather, providing a steady and comfortable hold even amid the chaos of combat. Warriors of this time prized such swords for their ability to deliver forceful strikes while remaining manageable in hand. Accompanying the sword is a scabbard, designed to shield the blade and allow for quick, reliable drawing.

Fun fact: Many Dark Age swordsmiths used a folding technique, hammering and folding the steel multiple times,to rid the blade of impurities and produce a layered structure, a practice that laid the groundwork for the more intricate pattern welding seen in later medieval swords.
