Description
The buckler is a compact shield that saw steady use from the early Middle Ages through the Renaissance, before the rise of firearms changed the face of warfare. It holds a special place in martial history as the focus of one of the oldest surviving combat manuals, revealing techniques passed down through generations of swordsmen.
This Battle Ready Medieval Buckler Shield is forged from sturdy fourteen gauge steel, featuring a riveted X brace radiating from the central boss to reinforce the body and a solid steel rim to absorb and deflect blows. The handle, made of steel and wrapped in wood, is securely riveted to the main plate, ensuring a firm grip even when sweat begins to gather during the heat of battle.
When you hold a buckler, you’re handling more than just a small shield. Unlike larger shields strapped to the forearm, the buckler is grasped solely with the hand, granting it remarkable agility. This hand-held design allows a fighter to maneuver it quickly, rotating it to guard the sword hand from cuts and thrusts or thrusting it forward to intercept attacks or even strike an opponent. While many shields were wielded alongside a variety of weapons, bucklers were primarily paired with single-handed swords. However, historical records also show their use with longer blades like the hand-and-a-half sword, and during the Renaissance, with the rapier.
