Description
This belt chape fitting, fashioned in the High Medieval style, is cast from solid brass,a material favored in the period for its durability and resistance to corrosion. The piece features two brass plates securely riveted onto the main body, a common technique used by medieval craftsmen to reinforce the chape and provide added decoration. Designed to be attached to the tip of a custom leather belt, it includes pre-drilled holes to accommodate rivets or stitching, allowing for a sturdy and lasting fit. While the chape itself is ready for mounting, additional hardware such as rivets or thread must be sourced separately.
Dimensions: 3” x 1 1/8”
Intended to fit belts approximately 1 1/8” wide, matching typical belt widths of the High Medieval period.
Fun fact: Medieval belt chapes often served not only a practical function by protecting the leather from wear but also acted as a subtle indicator of the wearer’s status and wealth, with designs ranging from simple shapes to intricate insets like the clover motif found on this fitting.
