Description

Not all of the “double pay” soldiers wielded the large two-handed swords with parrying hooks along the blade. Many preferred smaller, quicker two-handers that allowed for greater agility on the crowded battlefield. Nearly every officer carried a sword of this type, and the famed Landsknecht Captain, George Frundsberg, bore one during his final campaign at the remarkable age of 82. This sword is larger than the typical hand-and-a-half weapon, designed to be gripped firmly with both hands.

In the chaos following the initial clash of pikes, there was little room for finesse or elegant swordplay, combat was raw and unforgiving. This sword excelled in delivering powerful chopping blows, its broad, sturdy blade capable of denting and crushing even the toughest armor of the day. This era marked the rise of the infantryman, as the heavily armored knight gave way to foot soldiers clad in partial armor. Though protected, these soldiers remained vulnerable to the cutting and cleaving power of swords and axes.

Forged from high carbon steel, the blade balances strength with resilience, able to withstand the rigors of battle. The wooden grip, wrapped tightly in leather, offers a steady hold amid the fray, while the steel pommel and crossguard serve to protect the hand and maintain balance during swings. A sturdy scabbard would have accompanied the sword, allowing the soldier to carry it securely when not engaged. This style of sword reflects the practical needs and brutal efficiency of the Landsknecht mercenaries, fierce infantrymen who helped shape the tactics and weapons of early modern warfare.
