Description

Crafted from hardened leather reinforced with sturdy steel bands, this early Norman helmet reveals the straightforward, no-nonsense approach of a man-at-arms ready for the fray. The side guards, fashioned from soft suede, shield the cheeks while still allowing the wearer to move and breathe easy, vital when the clash of steel is all around. The steel nasal guard, a solid bar running down the center of the face, stands firm to block sword strikes and arrows aimed at the vulnerable nose and eyes. Inside, a padded, adjustable liner cradles the head, making it possible to wear the helmet comfortably through long marches or hours in the saddle. This balance of protection and practicality was typical of the armor Norman soldiers donned during the 11th century, especially through the Norman Conquest. A bit of blacksmith’s trade knowledge: the nasal guard was usually the last piece to be fitted, as it needed to be carefully shaped and aligned to the wearer’s face to provide the best defense without hindering vision or breathing. Fun fact: Knight’s Man-at-Arms helmets like this were often customized by their owners with painted crests or leather adornments, marking their loyalty and rank amid the chaos of battle.
