This type of Charay knife, also known as Charas, Churea, or Salawaryatagan, has its roots in the Indo-Persian world before becoming widely recognized across the Near East. Its familiar name, the “Khyber” Knife, comes from its association with the fierce tribal warriors of the Khyber Pass, who used it in close combat during their resistance against British forces. Even now, blades of this style remain in use as both tools and weapons across Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Northern India. Traditionally, the scabbard is worn tucked beneath a belt without fastenings, allowing the wielder to draw it swiftly when needed. These knives commonly bear blades between 14 and 30 inches long.

This particular example shows signs of age on both blade and scabbard, the grip fashioned from buffalo horn and brass fittings, all mounted on a full tang to ensure strength and balance. The grip terminates in a distinctive ring, which served to attach a wrist thong, preventing loss of the knife during vigorous use, whether in battle or daily tasks. The blade’s cross-section is “T” shaped, featuring a raised spine that runs the full length. This form keeps the blade slim and nimble while reinforcing it against bending or breaking during heavy work.

  • Overall length: 28-5/8″
  • Blade length: 22-5/8″, width: 2-1/8″, thickness: 3/16″ (thickening to 5/16″ along the spine)
  • Weight: 2 lbs

Fun fact: The “T” shaped blade of the Khyber knife not only adds strength but also reflects the mountain tribes’ skill in forging blades that balance practicality with a distinctive style, making each weapon a symbol of their identity.
