Description
The sire De Joinville was a French knight known for his unyielding courage and loyalty to King St. Louis. During the 7th Crusade, when he lost his lance, he gripped his sword tightly beneath his arm as though it were a lance itself, charging with fierce determination to strike down his Saracen adversary. This daring tactic gave rise to the name of this sword, a weapon that captures the essence of steadfast valor.
This style of sword became popular in the 1400s, valued for its ability to thrust effectively against the plate armor prevalent on the battlefield. Its design is straightforward and functional, focused on delivering piercing strikes rather than elaborate ornamentation. Forged from 1065 high carbon steel by skilled smiths at Windlass, the blade holds a sharp edge straight from the forge. The hilt is constructed from steel components, while the grip is hand-carved from hardwood and stained to a deep, rich hue. The leather scabbard is reinforced with metal fittings at the throat and tip, offering both protection and resilience.
Fun fact: The Joinville Sword Replica’s design reflects a transitional era when swords evolved from primarily slashing weapons to ones optimized for thrusting, adapting to the changing demands of armor and warfare in the late Middle Ages.
