This push dagger, known as a Katar, was widely used from the 16th to the 19th centuries across the Indian subcontinent. Its distinctive H-shaped horizontal grip fits tightly in the hand, allowing the wielder to thrust with the full power of the arm driving the blade forward. The example before you is modeled after a piece preserved in a British museum and features a “flame” or wavy blade forged from high carbon steel. This undulating shape was believed to improve cutting effectiveness and catch the eye amid the chaos of battle. The brass handle, treated with an antiqued finish, bears detailed flourishes on both the grip and guard, markings that speak to its use by nobility and warriors of high rank. The accompanying scabbard would have shielded the blade from damage while allowing swift deployment in close quarters.

  • Overall length: 19-1/2″
  • Blade length: 12-1/4″
  • Weight: 2 lbs

Fun fact: The Katar’s knuckle-guard grip design not only focused the force of a punch into a deadly thrust but also served as a mark of courage among Rajput warriors, with many examples bearing intricate engravings that told tales of family heritage and battlefield valor.
