Description

This hooded tunic takes its design from the garments worn by the Hospitaller Order, a brotherhood known for their steadfast presence during the Crusades. Made from heavy black cotton, it has long sleeves and a hood to protect the wearer from harsh weather encountered on campaign. The white cross embroidered boldly on the chest identifies the wearer’s loyalty to the order,a mark that was recognized and respected across many battlefields. A simple corded rope belt wraps the waist, reflecting the practical and humble style favored by monastic knights.

Sewn onto both the front and back are strips of aged chain mail, attached directly to the fabric to imitate the look of a full mail skirt beneath. This approach allowed knights to gain some protection without bearing the full weight or the clinking noise of a complete hauberk, striking a balance between mobility and defense. Such a construction reveals the Hospitaller’s focus on combining function with symbolic presence. To care for this garment, dry cleaning is advised to keep the fabric and embroidery in good condition.

Fun fact: The strips of mail sewn onto this tunic are inspired by the “aventail” technique, a method used to reinforce vital areas while keeping armor flexible,an early form of modular protection favored by medieval warriors.
