Description

Gjallarhorn was one of the Norse gods’ most treasured possessions. Its name means “blowing” or “yelling” horn, and in modern Icelandic, it translates to “megaphone”,a fitting description for this ancient instrument. When you blow into the horn, it naturally amplifies and projects your sound far beyond your own voice. The Vikings relied on horns like this to warn their kin of approaching battles, summon warriors to arms, or call the community together for meetings and meals. One can imagine the chaos when the calls for battle and dinner overlapped!

This particular horn has been hand-carved and polished from a genuine cow horn, preserving the natural curves and textures that make each piece unique. The mouthpiece is crafted from solid brass, providing a durable and comfortable surface for blowing. To produce the best sound, it’s not just a matter of blowing gently; you must give a strong, resonant call, something like a deep “aaaugha” or a sharp shout,to awaken the horn’s voice. Speak into it, shout, or try different tones, the horn responds to your effort, carrying your call across the open air.
