Description
Bearded axes are closely tied to the Viking Age warriors of Scandinavia, prized not only as tools but as weapons crafted for practical combat needs. When facing the formidable shield walls, those tight ranks of warriors standing shoulder to shoulder with shields locked together, breaking through was no easy feat. The design of the bearded axe was a clever solution to this challenge. Picture yourself in the fray: with the extended lower portion of the axe blade, known as the “beard,” you could hook an opponent’s shield edge and yank it downward or aside, creating an opening for your comrades to strike.
This hand forged axe is made from iron steel, shaped and tempered to balance strength with a keen edge. The blade’s cutting edge extends below the width of the butt, widening the striking surface while keeping the overall weight manageable for swift, controlled swings. The handle, crafted from sheesham wood and stained a warm brown, provides both durability and a comfortable grip in the heat of battle. Though we no longer face shield walls, wielding a bearded axe connects us to the fierce ingenuity of Viking warriors.
