This crested helmet hails from the days of ancient Greece, around 350 B.C., and over time it shaped the helmets worn by Roman soldiers. Legionnaires, Centurions, and Legates bore versions of this helmet well into the 4th century A.D. The design varied from straightforward, sturdy gear to elaborately adorned helmets that marked rank and unit. Forged from brass, the helmet’s form is hammered and shaped by hand, a demanding craft that balances protection with the wearer’s comfort. The horsehair crest, fastened with leather straps, did more than decorate,it made officers stand out amidst the din of battle. Though this helmet is not an exact replica of any single archaeological piece, its style draws from common features seen in surviving Greco-Roman helmets and relief sculptures. These helmets served not only as armor but also as symbols of authority and identity within the tightly organized Roman legions.
