Description
This backsword is built much like the ones favored by cavalrymen in the early modern period, with a wooden grip wrapped in genuine black rayskin to ensure a firm, tactile hold even in the heat of battle. The guard is forged from steel, featuring front rings and sturdy crossbars at the back, finished with long, curved quillons that shield the hand from strikes. The metal fittings bear a blackened finish, lending the sword a subdued, utilitarian look suited for combat readiness. Originally designed as a heavy cavalry weapon, the long, single-edged blade is made to deliver strong cutting blows capable of taking down foes both mounted and on foot. The blade’s stiffness and durability come from careful tempering of high carbon steel, making it tougher than many contemporary double-edged blades. This sword is accompanied by a fitting scabbard and is documented in the historic volume L’Armeria Reale Di Torino. Like a true working blade, it can be sharpened to maintain its edge over time.

Fun Fact: The German backsword, often called the “Katzbalger,” was a favorite among Landsknecht mercenaries. Its broad single-edged blade and distinctive S-shaped guard were designed to protect the hand during the fierce, close-quarters fighting common in their battles.
