Description
This knife takes its form from the trade knives that were common during the 18th century Colonial Period. In those days, traders often brought only the blades to exchange, leaving the task of crafting handles to the buyers. Frontiersmen and settlers would fashion handles from local woods, bone, or antler, each one shaped by hand to suit the owner’s needs and resources. The blade here is forged from stainless steel with a full profile tang, measuring 8-1/2″ overall with a cutting edge about 4-1/2″ long. The handle scales are made from dark-stained hardwood, fastened securely with solid brass wire and rivets, and include a lanyard hole for practical use. A sturdy leather belt sheath accompanies the knife, making it a reliable tool for bushcraft and wilderness survival.
- Overall length: 8 1/2″
- Blade length: 4 1/2″
Fun fact: French Style Trade Knives were prized not only for their simple, sturdy blades but also because they arrived without handles, allowing frontiersmen to customize each knife to their own hand and environment, a tradition that speaks to the ingenuity of early North American settlers.
