Description
In crafting these Medieval Shields, we follow time-honored methods passed down through generations of armorers. Each shield is constructed from sixteen thin layers of wood, carefully shaped and pressed one by one. This layering technique, known as lamination, creates a sturdy yet lightweight defense, far stronger than a single thick plank of wood. Each layer is soaked to soften the fibers, allowing it to bend and conform to the desired shape. Once pressed and dried, these layers bond into a solid, resilient barrier against blows.
The classic heater shape is then covered with heavy cotton cloth, which serves as a base for the next stages of reinforcement and decoration. Rivets secure the outer layers, adding both strength and character. The grip is fashioned from wood to provide a firm hold, while the back is lined with closed-cell foam for cushioning, wrapped in durable full-grain leather. An adjustable forearm strap ensures the shield stays snug and responsive during use.
Dimensions: 30″ x 22″ Weight: 5 lbs 2 oz.
Fun fact: The French Royal Shield often featured the fleur-de-lis, a stylized lily that symbolized purity and was a royal emblem, distinguishing the bearer’s noble status on the battlefield.
