Description
In the life of a medieval soldier or traveler, having a sturdy tripod to cook over an open fire was a necessity. This folding cooking tripod is made from hand-forged, blackened iron, shaped carefully on the anvil to endure the rough conditions of camp life. When set upright, it stands 42-1/2” tall, strong enough to hold heavy pots and kettles over the fire’s heat. The 3-3/4″ hanging hook fits a variety of cookware, and for adjusting the cooking height, iron “S” hooks were often used to raise or lower pots closer or farther from the flames. When the meal is ready, the tripod folds flat, making it easier to carry during marches or tuck away in limited space. In the image, it’s shown with iron “S” hooks and a hanging pan, tools that would have been familiar to any camp cook. After use, it’s important to wipe the iron clean and oil it lightly to prevent rust, preserving the metal for many meals to come.
- Overall height: 42-1/2″
- Weight: 8 lbs 14 oz
Fun Fact: Medieval cooks often used tripods like this not only for boiling stews but also for smoking meats by hanging them over smoldering fires, turning the tripod into a multipurpose kitchen tool in the field.
