Description

Immortalized by Mel Gibson’s portrayal of William Wallace, the Claymore sword stands as a powerful symbol of Scotland’s martial heritage and its long struggles with England. While the classic Claymore, with its distinctive forward-sloping quatrefoil crossguard, belongs to the late Medieval and Renaissance periods, earlier large two-handed swords were indeed wielded in medieval Scotland. These earlier blades, possibly used during the Wars of Scottish Independence in the late 13th and early 14th centuries, bear resemblance to this example of an Early Claymore.

This particular sword features a broad, unsharpened blade forged from high carbon steel, known for its strength and ability to hold an edge once sharpened. The crossguard and pommel are crafted from steel finished to resemble aged iron, lending a sense of weathered authenticity. The crossguard and ricasso are wrapped tightly in dark brown leather, providing a secure grip and reducing hand fatigue during prolonged use.

Fun fact: Early Scottish Claymores were often called “great swords” and could measure up to 55 inches in length, allowing warriors to deliver powerful, sweeping blows on the battlefield.
