Description
This legendary Durandal sword is said to have been bestowed upon King Charlemagne by an angel, later entrusted to his most valiant paladin, Roland. Though its true appearance is lost to history and legend, this interpretation embraces the spirit of medieval craftsmanship with a touch of the fantastical.
The broad blade is hand-forged from 1065 high-carbon steel, prized for its balance of hardness and flexibility, qualities vital for a weapon meant to withstand the rigors of battle. The metal crossguard, grip band, and pommel are plated in sterling silver, a material valued in the Middle Ages not only for its gleam but as a symbol of noble status. The pommel is substantial, bearing Charlemagne’s coat of arms on one side and a lion’s visage on the other, representing Roland’s courage and strength. The grip is wrapped in deep blood-red leather, embossed with a scrolling pattern inspired by the intricate designs found in medieval manuscript illumination. Accompanying the sword is a sturdy period-style scabbard and matching double belts, fashioned from the same rich leather to protect the blade and facilitate carrying.
Fun fact: According to legend, Durandal’s hilt was said to contain a tooth of Saint Peter, some hairs of Saint Denis, and a piece of the Virgin Mary’s robe, holy relics believed to grant the sword its unbreakable strength.
