This Dresden Rapier and Dagger Set offers a glimpse into the evolution of combination weapons, a concept that first appeared around the 14th century. These arms were forged to grant fighters flexibility in combat, merging the reach and finesse of a rapier with the close-in effectiveness of a dagger.

The rapier is fashioned for a two-handed grip, giving the wielder enhanced control and force for both cutting and chopping strikes. Its blade is made from tempered high carbon steel, known for maintaining a sharp edge through rigorous use, while the solid steel fittings provide sturdy support during the rigors of battle. The wooden grip, tightly wrapped in leather, ensures a firm hold even when sweat and blood would threaten to slip lesser weapons.

Concealed within the rapier’s main handle lies the dagger, ready to be drawn quickly when the fight narrows to tight quarters or when a swift change in tactics is called for. This clever design reflects the combat style of the early 16th century, where adaptability in both duels and skirmishes was essential.

Rapier specifications:

  • Overall length: 38-3/4″ (43-3/8″ with dagger inserted)
  • Blade length: 31-3/4″, width: 1-1/4″
  • Weight: 3 lbs 5 oz (without dagger)

Dagger specifications:

  • Overall length: 15-1/8″
  • Blade length: 10-3/4″
  • Weight: 6 oz

For those who wish to mark their weapon with personal initials, customization is possible.

This set is inspired by a combination weapon preserved in the Historisches Museum in Dresden, as recorded in the reference Kombinations Waffon, plate 178.

Fun fact: The Dresden Rapier’s design allowed a fencer to switch fluidly between long-range thrusts and rapid close-quarter strikes, a tactical edge that made combination weapons favored by both duelists and soldiers during the Renaissance.
