Description
Forged true to the original prop used by Cary Elwes in The Princess Bride, this sword is crafted from high carbon sprung steel (SAE 1065). As a blacksmith, I can tell you this steel is prized for striking the right balance between hardness and flexibility, crucial for a blade meant to endure the rigors of combat while maintaining a keen edge. The blade measures 31-3/4 inches, shaped to capture the swift, precise movements of the Dread Pirate Roberts himself. The grip is bound in leather, providing a secure hold that would suit a swordsman’s hand in the heat of battle. Chrome-plated steel fittings lend a gleam reminiscent of the swashbuckling style seen on screen.
Accompanying the sword is a leather scabbard and a wall-mounted display shield measuring 11″ by 14″, perfect for showcasing this piece. Each comes with a numbered plaque and certificate of authenticity, along with a booklet detailing the sword’s history and a note from director Rob Reiner.
A note on the blade’s edge: due to licensing restrictions, the sword is shipped without a razor-sharp edge. This doesn’t affect the quality of the blade’s construction but is something to keep in mind if you intend to handle it as a functional weapon. Should you choose to sharpen it yourself, take care to maintain the blade properly and respect the risks involved.
Fun fact: The Dread Pirate Roberts’ swordfight scenes in The Princess Bride were choreographed using the “Spanish Destreza” fencing style, a sophisticated and circular method of swordplay that emphasizes precision and control, just like the character wielding this very blade.
