Description

The Xiphos is a classic double-edged, one-handed short sword from the Iron Age, wielded by ancient Greek hoplites. Serving as a secondary weapon after the dory spear or javelin, it was designed for close-quarters combat when the reach of longer weapons was lost. The name “xiphos” is thought to carry the meaning of “penetrating light,” a fitting description for a blade meant to strike swiftly and decisively.

This particular blade takes inspiration from that ancient design but is crafted using modern Damascus steel techniques. The blade is hand-forged from a layered 1095 and 15N20 steel alloy, folded into 176 layers to produce both strength and flexibility. Tempered to a hardness of around 54 to 55 on the Rockwell scale, it strikes a balance between resilience and edge retention. The twisting pattern of the Damascus steel not only adds visual depth but also reflects the labor and skill poured into the forging process.

One distinctive feature of this sword is the fuller, rather than the usual vertical groove running down the center, this blade has a horizontal fuller carved nearly its entire length. This design choice reduces weight while maintaining structural integrity, allowing for quicker handling in tight combat.

The blade is mounted on a full tang, ensuring durability and solid control. The handle is fashioned from segmented sheesham wood, carefully contoured for a comfortable grip. Between each wooden segment are thin layers of teal-stained wood separated by brass spacers, all secured with brass pins. This layered handle construction not only provides a secure hold but also adds a striking visual contrast.

Accompanying the sword is a leather sheath designed for practical carry, featuring a back strap and belt loop to keep the weapon close at hand.
