Description

This ornate, entirely handcrafted saber from India stands as a testament to the traditional swordsmithing arts of the region. Its blade is forged from Damascus steel, a layered combination of two different steels hammered and folded together to create a distinctive rippled pattern across the surface. This technique was developed to balance hardness for edge retention with enough flexibility to absorb shock, a crucial feature given the quality of iron historically available to Indian smiths. Both sides of the blade feature panels of silver inlay, applied near the base to add both decoration and distinction.

The blade’s tang is secured inside the hollow hilt by packing the grip with a hardened resin, a traditional Indian method that ensures the blade remains firmly anchored during use. The hilt itself is adorned with intricate koftgari work,a labor-intensive process where the smith chisels designs into the steel and then hammers fine silver wire into these grooves. Afterward, the hilt is heated in a kiln, annealing the silver wire permanently into the etched patterns, creating a durable and decorative surface that reflects the smith’s artistry.

The accompanying scabbard features a wooden core wrapped in vibrant velvet, with steel fittings decorated in silver koftgari to complement the sword. This pairing not only protects the blade but also showcases the cohesive aesthetic values of Indian weaponsmithing, where function and ornamentation intertwine.

Each Damascus blade carries a unique pattern, much like a fingerprint, making every sword one-of-a-kind. Similarly, the koftgari designs vary according to the smith’s individual style and skill, ensuring that no two pieces are exactly alike. Together, these elements embody centuries of Indian metallurgical tradition and craftsmanship.

Fun Fact: The term “Damascus” in these blades is believed to originate from the city of Damascus, a major medieval trade center, though the steel was often produced in India or the Middle East. The distinctive patterns were as prized for their beauty as for their performance in battle.
