Description
This ornate saber from India showcases traditional swordsmithing techniques that have been passed down through generations. The blade is forged from Damascus steel, created by repeatedly folding and welding two distinct types of steel into a single billet. This results in the characteristic rippled pattern visible on the blade’s surface. Historically, combining harder and softer steels allowed smiths to achieve a balance of hardness for edge retention and flexibility to prevent brittleness, key qualities for a reliable fighting blade.
Both sides of the blade feature panels of silver inlay, a decorative touch that also reflects the skill of the smith. The blade’s tang is firmly secured within the hollow hilt and grip by filling the cavity with a hardened resin, a traditional Indian method that ensures the blade stays firmly anchored during use.
The hilt itself is adorned with intricate koftgari work, a time-honored technique where designs are carefully etched and chiseled into the steel. Fine strands of silver wire are then hammered into these etched patterns before the entire piece is heated in a kiln, permanently annealing the silver into the steel. This labor-intensive process results in a durable and visually striking decoration unique to each sword.
The wooden scabbard is covered in vibrant velvet and features steel fittings decorated with matching silver koftgari, tying the entire piece together in both form and function. Because the patterning in Damascus steel varies with each forging, and koftgari designs are individually crafted by the smith, every saber of this kind is a singular work of art, embodying the rich heritage of Indian swordmaking.
