This Persian Kard knife embodies the practical and symbolic roles it played throughout its history, serving as a tool for daily tasks, a weapon in close quarters, and a symbol of status among the Persian elite. Its form and function are rooted in centuries of blade-making tradition across Persia and the wider Middle East. The blade is forged from 512 layers of Damascus steel, a process where the smith repeatedly folds and hammers the steel to forge a blade that balances toughness with a keen edge. This technique also creates the blade’s characteristic flowing, water-like patterns, which are as much a signature of the smith’s skill as they are a mark of the blade’s quality. The bolster and pommel are fashioned from nickel silver, chosen for its strength and ability to provide a well-balanced feel in the hand. The grip is carved from camel bone,a material valued not only for its durability but also for the way it warms to the touch and offers a secure hold. The hardened leather sheath, designed to fully enclose the blade and cover half the hilt, was traditional for protecting the steel from the elements and for keeping the knife discreet when carried. This knife carries forward the spirit and techniques of Persian bladesmiths from a time when every edge was forged with both purpose and pride.
