This tunic was worn by the Order of the Poor Knights of the Temple of Jerusalem, known commonly as the Templars. It is fashioned from sturdy white cotton, a fabric thick enough to provide a modest layer of protection beneath mail armor, yet breathable enough to endure the rigors of long campaigns across harsh climates. The broad red cross sewn onto the front served as a powerful symbol of their sacred vow and acted as a rallying point on the battlefield. The tunic is secured with a simple corded belt, reflecting the practical and unadorned style typical of the era. Such garments were typically worn over chainmail hauberks, serving both as identification and as a barrier against wind and sun. To maintain its integrity, gentle care such as dry cleaning is advisable to preserve the fabric and embroidery. The tunic displayed here is sized L/XL and is shown alongside a cape, sword, and scabbard, which are not included with this piece.

Fun fact: The Cotton Crusader Tunic’s white color was meant to symbolize purity and devotion, while the red cross represented martyrdom and the willingness to shed blood for the holy cause.
