Description
Circa 1066
According to tradition, when William first set foot on English soil, he stumbled and fell flat on his face. Rising, he declared, “I have already grasped my Kingdom.” This bold statement is inscribed in Latin along the straight hilt: Jam Accepisse Regnum. The grip is fashioned from solid wood, wrapped in deep blood-red leather and tightly bound with braided silver wire, ensuring a firm hold while adding an element of distinction.
The sword is accompanied by a wooden scabbard covered in brown leather, embossed with the Conqueror’s cross, and a matching blood-red belt designed in the style of the period. These components highlight the balance between practical use and symbolic meaning that a warrior’s weapon carried in the 11th century.
Fun fact: The design principles of the Conqueror’s sword, its balance, fuller, and decorative cross motifs, shaped English sword-making traditions for centuries, influencing weapons well into the later medieval age.
