Description

The Red Dragon swords are forged from high carbon EN42J spring steel, a material chosen for its balance of flexibility and strength, much like the blades wielded by warriors of old. The blades undergo careful forging and tempering to achieve a core hardness around 45 HRC, with the cutting edge hardened to approximately 50 HRC. This heat treatment ensures the blade can endure the stresses of cutting while maintaining resilience. The hilts are constructed with steel guards and pommels styled to reflect 13th-century designs, providing protection and balance. The grips are made from wood and wrapped tightly in leather cord, offering a secure hold that would have been familiar to knights and soldiers. Each sword is paired with a wooden scabbard wrapped in leather, suitable for carrying and protecting the blade.

The Red Dragon Combat Hand-and-a-half Sword is modeled after the longswords of the 13th century, a period when such swords were favored for their adaptability in battle. The broad blade excels at delivering powerful slashes, while its balanced point allows for effective thrusting. The blade’s edge is 2mm thick, thicker than many modern replicas, which increases durability and safety, especially important for historical European martial arts (HEMA) practice and stage combat where controlled cutting drills are performed. The slightly rounded tip further reduces risk during training. While the heavier edge adds weight to the sword, it reflects the practical requirements of a battlefield weapon designed to withstand impact without chipping.

Fun Fact: The hand-and-a-half sword earned its name because its grip was long enough to be wielded with either one or two hands, offering fighters flexibility to adapt their fighting style mid-battle. This design bridged the gap between the lighter arming swords and the larger two-handed greatswords of later periods.
