This sword takes its name from the Battle of Chioggia, a decisive naval engagement where the Venetian fleet broke Genoese control of the seas in the late 14th century. The design is typical of Italian bladesmiths of the period, favoring practicality and balance for one-handed use. The blade is forged from high carbon steel that has been carefully tempered to hold a sharp edge and withstand the rigors of combat. A full-length fuller runs along the blade’s center, reducing weight while maintaining rigidity, allowing the wielder to deliver swift, precise strikes without tiring.

The guard, fashioned from steel, is shaped with bevelled edges to better deflect incoming blows, while the deeply fluted pommel helps counterbalance the blade’s length, enhancing control. The grip is made from seasoned wood, wrapped tightly in leather, and secured with stud rivets to provide a secure hold even in the heat of battle. Measuring 39 inches overall, with a 32-inch blade just under two inches wide and about three-sixteenths of an inch thick, this sword weighs just under 3 pounds, making it nimble yet sturdy enough for prolonged use. It is paired with a decorated scabbard, crafted to protect the blade and reflect the care given to one’s arms between engagements.

Fun fact: The Chioggia style sword represents a shift in medieval weaponry, where lighter, quicker blades became favored over heavier swords, reflecting changes in battlefield tactics and the rise of more mobile infantry and cavalry forces.
