Description

The sword known as Charlemagne’s, kept in the Louvre, first appears in the records around 1270, when it was used for the coronation of King Philip the Bold. Though tradition ties this blade to Charlemagne himself, who lived over twelve centuries earlier, studies date it to the early 13th century, near the time it is first mentioned in documents. This points to its role as a ceremonial coronation sword rather than a weapon wielded in battle by the emperor. Marto of Spain has crafted a faithful reproduction of this iconic sword, reflecting the medieval smiths’ dedication to both form and symbolism.

The hilt is plated with 24 karat gold and adorned with detailed antiqued patterns, reminiscent of the elaborate decoration favored by high nobility in the Middle Ages. The blade is forged from polished 420 stainless steel, a modern steel chosen for its resilience and gleam, evoking the bright, sharp blades that were as much a sign of rank as they were tools of war. While this replica comes without a scabbard, it serves well as a display piece that captures the spirit of medieval pageantry and the weight of history.

Decorative use only. Intended for wall decor, displays, home or office decor, or for costume.

Fun fact: The sword known as “Joyeuse,” attributed to Charlemagne, was said to change colors thirty times a day and was carried during French coronations for centuries, symbolizing the enduring legacy of royal authority.
