Description

This style of cross, known widely as the Celtic Cross, first took shape during the early Middle Ages across Ireland and Britain. Its distinctive ring surrounding the intersection of the arms not only reinforces the structure but also symbolizes eternity and unity,a design born from both spiritual meaning and practical craftsmanship.

This particular pendant is cast from 99.9% lead-free English pewter, a metal favored by smiths for its ease of casting and gentle, silvery luster. Once poured into the mold and cooled, the piece is carefully antiqued to bring out the depth of the interlaced Celtic knotwork engraved on its face, patterns that echo those carved into ancient stone crosses and illuminated manuscripts. These endless loops are more than decoration; they carry stories and beliefs woven through generations. Measuring 2-1/4″ by 1-3/4”, the pendant hangs from a 30” black leather thong fastened with a screw clasp, accompanied by a small velveteen drawstring pouch for safe keeping.

Fun fact: The ring encircling the Celtic Cross is believed to have been inspired by earlier sun crosses and may have helped strengthen the arms of stone crosses, allowing them to withstand the harsh weather common to the British Isles.
