The long and brutal series of campaigns between England and France from 1337 to 1453, known as the Hundred Years War,though it stretched closer to 120 years, was rooted in tangled claims over French lands held by English kings, French support for the Scots against England, and disruptions to the vital wool trade connecting England and Flanders. The conflict ignited when Edward III of England asserted his claim to the French crown through his mother, Isabella, daughter of King Philip IV of France. This Castillon Bastard Sword takes its name from the Battle of Castillon in 1453, a decisive French victory that marked the end of the war.
The sword’s guard and pommel are cast from solid brass, providing both balance and durability. The grip is wrapped in wood and leather, offering a firm and reliable hold during the heat of combat. Its blade is forged from high-carbon steel, tempered carefully to achieve a blend of hardness and flexibility, essential traits for a weapon meant to withstand the strikes and parries of battle without breaking or bending excessively. The blade measures just under 33 inches, wide and thick enough to deliver powerful cutting blows or thrusts. A leather scabbard accompanies the sword, designed to shield the blade from the elements and wear when not in use.
