Description

Allow yourself to be drawn into the imposing presence of this giant nodachi, a great long sword that commands attention with its sheer size. Traditionally used by foot soldiers in feudal Japan to combat cavalry, the nodachi’s lengthy blade extends far beyond the reach of ordinary swords. This particular example measures an extraordinary 78 inches overall, with a carbon steel blade 57 inches long, forged with a full tang that stretches an additional 21 inches into the handle for balance and strength.

The handle is wrapped in a traditional braided cotton cord over imitation ray skin, providing a textured grip that would have helped samurai maintain control during sweeping strikes. The blackened cast metal tsuba (guard) and pommel are sturdy and functional, designed to protect the wielder’s hands while adding weight to the sword’s balance. The tsuba measures 3.25 inches in diameter, a size appropriate to the blade’s scale. Securing the blade to the handle are double bamboo pegs and a brass minuke, traditional components that ensure durability in battle.

Mounted with a copper habaki, the blade fits snugly into its wooden scabbard, which is finished in a flat black paint,a practical design choice that would reduce glare and help conceal the weapon. The scabbard also features a black bull horn bow, completing the sword’s imposing silhouette.

This nodachi’s carbon steel blade is crafted to reflect the composition of historical Japanese blades, offering a balance of hardness and flexibility essential for cutting power without brittleness. The full tang construction underscores the sword’s robust build, essential for the vigorous demands of battlefield use.

Fun fact: The nodachi’s impressive length made it a challenging weapon to wield in close quarters, so it was often used in open fields or as a ceremonial sword. Its size and weight required exceptional strength and skill, and many nodachi were actually worn slung on the back rather than at the waist.
