Description
This drinking horn is crafted from a genuine buffalo horn, shaped and smoothed to serve as a sturdy vessel for ale, mead, or other hearty beverages common in feasting halls. The surface bears a carved scale-like pattern, lending it a textured, ridged feel reminiscent of reptilian armor or fish scales, both motifs often admired in various cultures for their symbolic protection and vitality.
Take note that the interior remains unlined, meaning the horn is in its natural state and can be used for drinking straight away. However, to preserve the horn and prevent any unwanted flavors or leaks, a traditional approach involves melting beeswax and carefully pouring it inside. By rotating the horn as the wax cools and hardens, a thin, protective coating forms, sealing the interior much like smiths would temper metal to guard against corrosion.
Fun Fact: Buffalo drinking horns were prized not only for their durability but also because the horn’s natural shape made them easy to hold and carry during long hunts or battles, allowing warriors to stay hydrated without slowing their stride.
