Description
Step into the workshop of a 19th-century gunsmith with this Hawksley Replica Black Powder Flask, shaped to match those used from 1830 to 1870. Crafted from polished brass, the same material favored by G. & J.W. Hawksley, it carries the weight and feel of a genuine period piece. The “bag style” form was designed to nestle comfortably in a pistol holster or pocket, a practical design for shooters needing quick, reliable access to their powder.
The flask’s removable brass head houses a Sykes flameproof valve, a clever safety device developed to reduce the risk of accidental ignition,a real concern when handling black powder. This valve was a notable advancement for its day, allowing the shooter to safely measure and dispense powder in precise amounts of 5/16, 1/4, or 3/16 drams, essential for properly loading muzzle-loading pistols and revolvers.
A sturdy lanyard loop at the base was meant for hanging the flask from a cord or strap, keeping it close at hand during hunts or on the firing line. Measuring 4-7/8″ long, 1-3/8″ wide, and 1″ thick, it’s compact enough for easy carry yet holds enough powder for extended use between reloads.
Over time, the polished brass will develop a warm, aged patina, much like the flasks carried by frontiersmen and cavalry troopers. This natural darkening tells a story of use and time, marking each flask with a history all its own.
Fun fact: Many brass powder flasks were engraved by their owners with initials or decorative designs, turning each into a personal keepsake as well as a vital tool on the frontier or battlefield.
