Description

Circa 1408

This English Bastard Sword takes its name from the final clash on Bramham Moor, where the Percy family’s rebellion against King Henry IV reached its bloody conclusion. Swords like this were carried by knights, lords, and men-at-arms caught up in the fierce contests for England’s throne. The blade is forged from fully tempered high carbon steel, shaped into a diamond cross section that strikes a balance between rigidity and cutting power, well suited for both thrusting and slicing amid the chaos of late medieval combat. The grip is wrapped in tough leather, cross-laced and studded to provide a secure hold even when wet with sweat or blood. The steel pommel bears an etched shield and cross, symbols that speak to the martial spirit and chivalric codes of the age. The accompanying scabbard is crafted with care, fitted with brass fittings on the steel throat and chape to protect the blade and allow for a smooth draw. A leather belt completes the set, designed to carry the sword comfortably at the hip.
  • Overall length: 43-3/4″
  • Blade length: 34″ long, 1-7/8″ wide, 3/16″ thick
  • Weight: 3 lbs 2 oz

This sword earned the name “bastard” because its length falls between the shorter arming sword and the larger greatsword, offering knights an adaptable weapon for the shifting demands of the battlefield.

Fun fact: Though tied to the Percy family’s last stand at Bramham Moor, bastard swords like this one became increasingly popular among English warriors in the early 15th century as armor improved and fighting styles evolved.
