Description
The Scottish Broadsword, often called the Basket-Hilted Sword, first came into its own in the 16th century and saw widespread use through the 17th and 18th centuries. This sword was designed primarily for battle, favored by Highland warriors for its sturdy construction and protective hilt. Over time, it also found a place in Scottish fencing schools during the 18th century, where its balance and guard made it suitable for training and dueling.
The hallmark of this sword lies in its basket-shaped guard, originally a simpler wired design that evolved into a more elaborate brass construction as smiths refined their craft. This basket hilt shields the hand from blows and entanglement, allowing the wielder to fight with confidence. The blade itself is forged from high carbon steel, featuring a fuller,a shallow groove running along the blade,to lighten it without sacrificing strength. The edges come factory-sharpened but can be honed further to suit one’s preference.
The handle is wrapped in leather and reinforced with brass threading, providing a firm grip. The brass basket hilt is complemented by a red fabric lining inside, a detail that would have been both decorative and practical, cushioning the hand. At the pommel, a red tassel completes the look, a traditional touch often seen in ceremonial or dress versions of the sword.
Accompanying the sword is a steel scabbard equipped with two lanyard rings, allowing the sword to be securely attached to a belt or baldric. While this piece is crafted with attention to historical detail and techniques, it serves primarily as a display item, reflecting the artistry and martial culture of Scotland’s past.
