Description
Some katana bear the weight of history, dedicated to the memory of great rulers, warlords, generals, and legendary battles from Japan’s past. This particular katana honors Nagasone Kotetsu, a renowned swordsmith from the Edo period. Born into a family of armorers, Kotetsu transitioned his craft toward blade forging, creating swords famed for their strength and resilience. Tales tell of his blades slicing through kabuto helmets,a feat not to be attempted outside of legend. While historical records debate the exact number of blades he forged, and many imitations bear his name, the enduring reputation of his craftsmanship remains a testament to his skill. For collectors and martial artists alike, studying Kotetsu’s work offers insight into a pivotal era of Japanese swordmaking.
Our tribute to this master swordsmith is embodied in the Armourer’s Katana. The tsuba features a pierced yanone design, a motif echoed in the menuki, reflecting a balance of simplicity and strength reminiscent of Kotetsu’s blades.
This katana can be described in two words: hidden strength. Its understated beauty lies in the modest, blackened textured handle fittings complementing the silver menuki. The tsuka is wrapped in dark brown Japanese cotton ito over genuine samegawa (ray skin), arranged in the traditional diamond pattern. A dark chocolate brown saya pairs with a lighter brown sageo, accented by buffalo horn kurikata and kojiri, completing the ensemble with subtle harmony.
The blade is forged from a blend of T10 and 1055 steels, folded to reveal the grain pattern known as hada without compromising durability. The hamon follows the o-choji style, a classic irregular clove-shaped temper line running along the edge. Further blade specifications are detailed below.
It is fitting to imagine Nagasone Kotetsu approving of this homage, as it embodies the qualities he prized: strength, resilience, and understated elegance in a weapon designed for purpose and durability. With this katana, we honor his legacy and the enduring spirit of the swordsmith’s art.
Fun fact: The term “Armorer’s Katana” reflects the historical connection between armorers and swordsmiths, as many early Japanese bladesmiths originally crafted armor before dedicating themselves to forging blades, blending the knowledge of protection and offense into their work.
