Antique Brass Anchor Lantern for Merchant Ships

The anchor light on a ship serves a vital purpose: it signals to other vessels that the ship is at rest, anchored in place. Traditionally, this is a white, all-around light, hoisted high atop the mast where it can be seen from all directions. Back in the days of merchant sailing vessels, these lanterns burned oil or kerosene, casting a steady glow as the ship awaited entry to port.

This particular lantern is crafted from brass with an aged patina, giving it the feel of something passed down through many voyages. The clear glass globe, with its Fresnel lens design, focuses the light into a bright, far-reaching beam. The lantern is fitted with handles both at the top and bottom, allowing it to be secured firmly to the mast. When in use, one rope would tie to the handle at the top to hoist it aloft, while another rope attached to the bottom handle kept it from swinging wildly as the ship rolled with the waves.

The top of the lantern opens to reveal the burner assembly, where the wick is adjusted to control the flame. An S-hook fastened by a small chain locks the top securely in place to prevent it from opening during rough seas. Inside the globe sits the oil reservoir and wick holder, designed to keep the flame burning steadily. This lantern also comes with an extra wick, a practical touch for long voyages.

Ventilation is crucial for any oil lamp, and the decorative cutouts around the top of this lantern allow air to flow freely, feeding the flame while letting heat escape.
