Description
This Polish 1917 Ulahn Saber features a blade forged from high carbon steel, known for its strength and ability to hold a sharp edge. One side of the blade bears the etched motto HONOR I OJCZYZNA (Honor and Fatherland), a solemn reminder of the values held by the cavalrymen who wielded it. The hilt is constructed from cast brass, shaped with practical detail, while the grip is formed from wood wrapped in leather and tightly bound with brass wire for a secure hold during the chaos of battle. Accompanying the saber is a steel scabbard equipped with a pair of steel hanging rings, designed for ease of carry on horseback.
This model was among the first sabers issued to Poland’s renowned Ulahn cavalry following the nation’s rebirth in 1918. These sabers saw action at the 1920 Battle of Komar during the Polish-Soviet War, where Polish cavalry clashed with Soviet forces in what became one of the last large-scale cavalry engagements in military history. The Polish Ulahns’ charge helped stop the Soviet advance into Europe, reinforcing Poland’s hard-won independence in a conflict that shaped the continent’s future.
Please note: Steel blades and scabbards often show signs of wear such as scuffs or scratches. These blemishes result from the blade’s repeated contact with the steel scabbard over time and are typical of weapons carried and used in the field.
Fun fact: The 1917 Polish Cavalry Saber design was influenced by earlier Austro-Hungarian models, reflecting the complex history of the region’s military traditions before Poland regained independence.
