Description

This reproduction of the SMLE No. 1, Mk III bayonet faithfully reflects the early World War I design, notable for its quillion guard,a feature that was later discarded as the brutal realities of trench warfare set in. The blade carries genuine British markings and is forged from high carbon steel, then carefully tempered to hold a sharp edge capable of both fighting and practical tasks in the field. The metal has been treated with a deep bluing, which not only guards against rust but gives the blade a muted, battle-ready appearance. The wooden grips are finished with rubbed oil, a traditional method that preserves the wood and ensures a firm, comfortable hold even in damp conditions. The scabbard is crafted from stitched leather, reinforced with blackened metal fittings at the throat and tip to withstand the rigors of campaign life. Its lozenge-style frog would have allowed a soldier to fasten the bayonet securely to his belt, keeping it close at hand. This piece stands as a testament to the straightforward, functional design and materials used in British military gear of the early 1900s.

  • Overall Length: 22″
  • Blade Dimensions: 17-1/4″ long, 1″ wide, 3/16″ thick
  • Weight: 1 lb 2 oz

Fun fact: The quillion on the early SMLE bayonet was meant to catch an enemy’s blade in combat, but soldiers soon found it could snag on gear or trenches, leading to its removal in later models.
