Description

Sugarloaf helmets belong to the family of top helms, distinguished by their sphero-conical domes that taper to a rounded peak, resembling the shape of a traditional sugarloaf. This style was favored across Europe during the early 14th century, offering a balance of protection and visibility on the battlefield.

This particular helmet is crafted from 18 gauge steel, providing a sturdy yet workable thickness for combat use. The lower section is composed of two separate steel plates, securely riveted to the dome to reinforce the structure and protect the neck and lower face. Brass accents adorn the front, forming a cross that holds the eye slits in place. These slits, measuring just under four inches wide, are narrow enough to shield the wearer’s eyes while allowing adequate vision. Ventilation holes are punched into the front plate to help with airflow, essential during prolonged wear.

Inside, a leather suspension liner cushions the head, distributing the helmet’s weight evenly. An adjustable chin strap made of leather, fastened with a steel buckle, keeps the helmet firmly seated during movement. A steel loop is included to secure any excess strap length, preventing it from flapping or catching on equipment.

This helmet design lends itself well to medieval fencing and combat reenactments, offering a straightforward fit and reliable protection without excessive weight.
