Description
The Model 1840 noncommissioned officers’ sword carries a storied past, having been wielded in battle from the Mexican War through to the Spanish–American War. During the American Civil War, this sword was a common sidearm for Union sergeants and, following the seizure of state arsenals, Confederate soldiers as well. There was also a variant made without a hand guard, known as the musicians’ sword, issued to military musicians for personal defense. The blade’s design, with its narrow profile and notably thick spine, clearly prioritizes thrusting over slashing, reflecting the fencing doctrines of the time. Though the sword’s hilt is somewhat heavier than other contemporary models, this did not diminish its widespread use over nearly seven decades. As firearms advanced, the Model 1840 gradually transitioned from a combat weapon to a ceremonial symbol of rank and duty. The blade on this reproduction is forged from carbon steel and treated with oil to guard against rust. The handle is crafted from wood, wrapped tightly with brass wire, and finished with a brass pommel and hand guard. The scabbard is wrapped in genuine leather and fitted with brass fittings at the throat and tip, completing the authentic look of this historic piece.
