Description

This Irish Targe is a sturdy and striking example of Gaelic craftsmanship, modeled after a shield once carried by the last chieftain of the O’Donovan clan, now displayed above the hearth in Lissard Hall, Ireland. The core is fashioned from solid timber, chosen for its balance of strength and weight, then covered with thick leather that bears embossed patterns reflecting traditional Gaelic designs. At its center sits a solid brass boss, riveted firmly to deflect blows, while numerous brass studs reinforce the face, adding both protection and a characteristic aesthetic. On the reverse, soft suede leather provides comfort against the arm, accompanied by a leather arm brace and a hand grip designed to secure the shield firmly in battle, allowing for both defense and maneuverability.

Fun fact: In the 16th century, O’Donovan targes were sometimes painted with bright colors and intricate clan symbols, serving not only as protection but also as a bold statement of family pride on the battlefield.
