Description
The Bardiche is a formidable two-handed polearm that traces its origins to the late Danish axe, evolving into a weapon favored across Eastern Europe during the 14th and 15th centuries. This replica is forged from high carbon steel, a material prized for its balance of hardness and toughness, essential for a blade meant to endure the rigors of combat. The blade itself measures a substantial 20 ½ inches and curves into a broad crescent shape, designed to deliver powerful chopping blows. You’ll notice the punched holes along the blade, these serve to reduce weight without compromising strength, a practical feature that also adds character to the weapon.
The blade’s edges are thick and rounded at the points, a design choice that helps resist chipping and damage during use, while also providing a measure of safety when handling. The blade is mounted onto a large socket welded along its spine, reinforced by a pre-drilled tang at the base, allowing it to be securely fastened to a wooden shaft, traditionally ash or oak,to withstand the force of battle. Given the blade’s weight of nearly 3 pounds, a sturdy shaft is essential to maintain balance and control.
While this piece arrives without a shaft, it invites you to select a solid hardwood pole to complete the assembly, much like the craftsmen of old would have done. Once mounted, the bardiche served not only as a weapon of war but also as a versatile tool for infantry, capable of hooking, cleaving, and thrusting in the chaos of medieval combat.
