Description
This training katana is forged from 1045 high carbon steel, a material favored for its balance of hardness and flexibility, qualities essential for a blade meant to withstand rigorous practice. The blade is sharpened and polished to reveal a traditional hamon, the wave-like temper line that forms during differential heat treatment, marking the boundary between the harder edge and the softer spine. Running along the blade is a deep bohi, or groove, which serves to lighten the sword and improve its balance without sacrificing strength.
The blade’s full tang extends through the handle, secured with bamboo pegs, a method rooted in centuries of Japanese sword-making tradition to ensure durability and stability. The handle is covered in white faux rayskin, providing a textured surface that helps maintain grip, and wrapped in beige polyester ito using the classic crisscross pattern. Beneath the ito, a zinc alloy dragon motif emerges on both sides, symbolizing power and protection. The round tsuba, also zinc alloy, features a serene scene highlighted with gold tones, serving both as a hand guard and an artistic element. Other fittings on the handle share the same material, completing the sword’s cohesive design.
The accompanying scabbard is crafted from hardwood, showcasing its natural grain beneath a lacquer finish that guards against moisture and wear. A beige polyester sageo cord is attached, traditionally used to secure the scabbard to the belt. A black dust cover is included to protect the sword from dust and environmental damage when stored.
